Error Messages (Msg 169): A column has been specified more than once in the order by list. Columns in the order by list must be unique.

Description:

Lets suppose There is created “Testable” Table in database in SQL SERVER 2014.

 

Id             Name      Status
2              ANNY     0
1              Ashlee    1

 

And You want to retrieve data in Ascending order by “ID” Column and Executing the given query in SQL SERVER 2014.

 

Select * from Testable Order by ID, NAME, ID

 

 

Error Message :


But getting the below errors. 



Msg 169, Level 15, State 1, Line 3
A column has been specified more than once in the order by list. Columns in the order by list must be unique.

 

 

Causes:

Same Column is assigned many times but you cannot use same column more than one in ORDER BY list.

 

Solution of the Error:

Remove the Repeated column in ORDER BY list. Here is the correct way to use columns with ORDER BY caluse.

 

Select * from Testable Order by ID, NAME
 

 

Output :


Id            Name    Status
1              ANNY    0
2              Ashlee  1
