Error Messages (Msg 1781): Column already has a DEFAULT bound to it.

Let’s suppose you have created below table in SQL Server by using given query.


CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CustomerDetail] (
[CustomerID]     INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1, 1),
[FirstName]    VARCHAR(50),
[LastName]     VARCHAR(50),
[IsActive]     BIT DEFAULT(1)


Now you are executing the below mentioned query.


ALTER TABLE CustomerDetail ADD Constraint
df_Active Default 0 for



Error Message:

But getting the below error. 

Msg 1781, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Column already has a DEFAULT bound to it.



In above SQL statement, you are attempting to add default constraint to a column when one default constraint already exists so you are getting the above error.


Solution of the Error:

You have to follow below steps.


Step 1: To drop existing default constraint, you need to check constraint name .it can be determined using the given statement.


EXECUTE [dbo].[sp_helpconstraint] 'CustomerDetail'


Step 2: The [dbo].[sp_helpconstraint] statement returns list of constraint type for table “CustomerDetail”, You can drop existing default constraint using the given statement.


ALTER TABLE CustomerDetail DROP Constraint DF__CustomerD__IsAct__41B8C09B


Step 3: Now new default constraints can be associated to column using given statement.


ALTER TABLE CustomerDetail ADD Constraint df_Active Default 0 for IsActive
