Error Messages (Msg 8152): String or binary data would be truncated.

Pooja Goel  |   Jan 4, 2020  |  Views: 144

Description:

Let’s suppose you have created below table in SQL Server by using given query.

CREATE TABLE Company(
[CompanyID]       INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1, 1),
[CompanyName]     NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,    [Address]         VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
[City]            VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
[State]           CHAR(2) NOT NULL,
[ZIPCode]         VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL
)

Now you are executing the below mentioned query.

INSERT INTO Company (  [CompanyName],[Address], [City],[State], [ZIPCode] )
VALUES (  'E&Y', 'Greatner noida sector 144','GNoida', 'Uttar Pradesh', '201045' )

Error Message:

But getting the below error.

Msg 8152, Level 16, State 14, Line 2
String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated.

Causes:

In above SQL statement, data type and size is fixed as CHAR(2) for column “State” so you cannot insert value whose size more than 2.

Solution of the Error:

Assign the values  such as “UP” to Column  “State ”when you are inserting data in table in SQL Server.

Here is the correct way to insert data into table.

INSERT INTO Company (  [CompanyName],[Address], [City],[State], [ZIPCode] )
VALUES (  'E&Y', 'Greatner noida sector 144','GNoida', 'UP', '201045' )

Output :

CompanyID    CompanyName          Address                      City      State      ZIPCode
10           E&Y                Greatner noidasector 144     GNoida     UP        201045
